CADDO PARISH, LA– Caddo Parish Parks and Recreation has been recognized with an Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties (NACo). The awards honor innovative, effective county and parish government programs that strengthen services for residents.

NACo recognized Caddo Parish Parks and Recreation MLK Community Garden Program and its impact on urban communities. The MLK Garden Program is located on the corner of MLK and Legardy in Shreveport, Louisiana and has been in existence since 2019. The garden program was recognized for its hands-on gardening / nutritional literacy activities, community engagement, and partnership with area nonprofit organizations such as Shreveport Green, AmeriCorps, and ShreveCorps.

“The Caddo Parish Parks and Recreation Department is honored to be nationally recognized by NACo. We envision the MLK Community Garden Program to serve as a model year-round teaching garden site for area youth, adults, seniors and families. All citizens of the Shreveport MLK community should  be proud of this national recognition,” said Patrick Wesley-Director of Caddo Parish Parks and Recreation.

NACo President Mary Ann Borgeson said, “We are seeing firsthand now more than ever that counties work tirelessly to support our residents. This year’s Achievement Award-winning programs showcase how counties build healthy, safe and vibrant communities across America.”

Nationally, awards are given in 18 different categories that reflect the vast, comprehensive services counties provide. The categories include children and youth, criminal justice and public safety, county and parish administration, information technology, health, civic engagement and many more.

Started in 1970, NACo’s annual Achievement Awards program is designed to recognize county government innovations. Each nominee is judged on its own merits and not against other applications received.
