PARISH OF CADDO SERVES OVER 5,000 SUMMER MEALS TO CADDO PARISH YOUTH

Caddo Parish, LA - Caddo Parish Parks and Recreation served a total of 5,840 healthy snacks and meals during the recent summer months of June through August for Caddo Parish youth and teens.

Caddo Parks Summer Feeding Program, funded by No Kid Hungry, provided grab-and-go snacks and meals for area youth participating in Caddo Parish Parks and Recreation programs and activities, such as summer camps, athletic leagues and sport clinics, health and wellness workshops, youth crime prevention programs and nature education programs.

“Thanks to Team No Kid Hungry’s generous donation of $50,000, Caddo Parish Parks and Recreation successfully fed many of our resilient Caddo Parish youth and teens this summer,” said Caddo Parks and Recreation director Patrick Wesley.  “The feedback we have received from participating youth and respective parents have been positive, and I am also proud of our department staff for facilitating this invaluable summer meal program,” said Wesley.

According to Feeding Louisiana’s 2020 Annual Report, the Summer Food Service Program reached only an estimated 11.9% of Louisiana children who receive free and reduced lunch during the school year in 2018. That puts Louisiana near the bottom of the national rankings below 41 other states. A declining number of children are receiving summer meals in Louisiana and a declining number of sites in the state now participate in the program, leaving Louisiana kids with fewer places to find free summer meals now than they did five years ago.

“We’re committed to working with organizations such as Team No Kid Hungry to bridge the gap here in Caddo Parish to provide our youth with the proper meals and nutrition, and we hope to continue this work next summer as well,” said Wesley.
