Caddo Parish Mosquito Control

The Caddo Parish Mosquito Control unit sprays neighborhoods following requests made by Caddo Parish citizens. Upon receiving a request for spray, a Caddo Parish Mosquito Control Officer will inspect the neighborhood, particularly the property of the homeowner requesting the spray, for potential breeding and harboring sites. After inspection, the Mosquito Control Officer will make recommendations to the homeowner(s) if needed.

Caddo Parish Mosquito Control continuously monitors the mosquito population in Caddo Parish by setting light traps to determine the areas that require treating. This method helps Caddo Parish Mosquito Control Officers determine both the population and species of the mosquito. With this information, a Mosquito Control Officer scouts for the breeding sites. Once the breeding sites are found, the Caddo Parish Mosquito Control Officer will larvicide and adulticide the area.

Larviciding consist of treating breeding sites which contain mosquito larvae. If mosquito larvae are found, the Caddo Parish Mosquito Control Officer will treat it with a biological control agent that is environmentally safe for humans, animals and other organisms.

Adulticiding, the killing of adult mosquitoes, consist of applications of insecticides approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and developed for urban mosquito control. The Caddo Parish Mosquito Control Department has properly trained and licensed mosquito control applicators to spray this insecticide properly. Urban areas are treated with truck mounted equipment.

Prevent Yourself from Being Bitten by Mosquitoes:

  1. Wear light clothing. Mosquitoes are attracted to dark clothing.
  2. Wear environmentally safe insect repellents.
  3. Put screens on your windows and doors.

Wildlife

Caddo Parish Animal Services responds to calls primarily involving domestic animals. As the development of Caddo Parish continues, encounters between our citizens and our native wildlife become more probable. Most wildlife in our area is harmless and in almost all cases would prefer to flee from any individual who they may encounter. Most conflicts between humans and wildlife occur because we have inadvertently created a source of food or shelter for the animals. Identifying that source and eliminating it will resolve most issues. With that in mind, we do live in an area that serves as the habitat for an extensive amount of wildlife and periodic encounters are inevitable.

For recommendations on how to identify common nuisance wildlife species and resolve conflicts please use the link below for the Louisiana Department of Widlife and Fisheries.

  • Common Nuisance Wildlife
  • If you have an animal that poses an immediate and imminent threat to the community contact our office and, if deemed necessary, an officer will respond. If you have an issue involving nuisance wildlife, please contact a private pest control or animal removal service to assist you in resolving your issue. Companies can be found on the internet or in the phone book.

    Rodent Control

The major elements needed for a successful, long lasting rodent-control program in a community is a strong, continuous educational program in environmental sanitation. It is essential that refuse (garbage and rubbish) handling facilities be improved, particularly in all blighted areas of the community, which almost invariably are the areas most heavily infested with rats. Proper storage of food and of refuse must be achieved neighborhood-by-neighborhood, block-by-block, residence-by-residence. Joint action of all concerned is essential.

Not only do rodents spread disease, but they are also filthy and destructive. Their control requires; (a) environmental sanitation to eliminate food and harborage (b) effective rat proofing, and (c) efficient killing programs. These control measures must be maintained on a continuous basis to keep rodent populations at the minimum level.
